🛣️ PROGRESS UPDATE: Louis Fourie Road Upgrade, Mossel Bay
As an eXp Realty professional in Hartenbos, I’m often asked how the local infrastructure is keeping up with our rapid growth.
The Louis Fourie Road upgrade is the heartbeat of our town's expansion.
While the roadworks require some patience now, the long-term impact on your property value and daily commute is going to be game-changing.
The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure is making steady progress on the R540 million upgrade of Louis Fourie Road in Mossel Bay, the largest Provincial road investment currently underway in the Garden Route.
August 2026: The Light at the End of the Tunnel
Construction remains on track, with completion expected by August 2026.
This project will improve traffic flow, safety, and access to businesses and residential areas along one of the busiest routes in Mossel Bay.
Key Improvements for Hartenbos Residents
- The upgrade covers just over 3 km of Louis Fourie Road, and includes:
- Expanding the road from a single carriageway to a dual carriageway
- Upgrading major intersections
- Building a new bridge over the Blinde River
- Rebuilding the N2 on- and off-ramps
- Realigning the Langeberg Mall entrance
- Constructing a pedestrian walkway from Waboom Road to Sonskynvallei
- Building a new road link between Garret Street and Gericke Street
- Constructing a new road under the railway bridge at Garret Street
- Resurfacing approximately 6 km of road on both sides of the project
These improvements are designed to support the rapid growth of Mossel Bay and reduce congestion in the long term.
Temporary traffic disruptions at Langeberg Mall intersection
The project has now reached a stage where short-term inconvenience is unavoidable, especially near the Langeberg Mall intersection, which is one of the most complex parts of the upgrade.
According to the Department’s project team, traffic delays are mainly caused by:
- Limited road width during construction
- Major realignment work at the intersection
- Reconstruction of the road surface
- Drivers blocking the intersection during peak traffic
Motorists are urged to be patient and obey traffic signals and pointsmen to help reduce delays.
Work at this intersection is expected to continue until end of March 2026, after which traffic flow should improve as additional lanes are opened.
The team is working to open extra lanes before the Easter weekend to ease congestion.
Upcoming construction changes motorists must note
- Access to Via Appie will be closed from 7 April for about two weeks
- Alternative routes:
○ Bally Crescent
○ Watson Avenue
- Pointsmen will assist traffic during this time.
- Final surfacing work may cause short one-day disruptions at certain intersections.
- Resurfacing between Voor Bay and Hartenbos is currently underway.
- Resurfacing between Voor Bay and Marsh Street will start after Easter.
- Both carriageways between The Lofts and Bally Crescent are expected to open before Easter.
Project progress and job creation
Provincial Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers confirmed that the project is progressing well:
“The project should be 89% complete at this stage and is currently at 85%, which means we are close to where we planned to be.
Residents are now starting to see visible progress after early delays caused by unmapped underground services and the need to replace ageing infrastructure before the new road could be built.”
The project has also created jobs and supported local businesses:
- 306 work opportunities created (target was 250)
- 49 341 person-days of work completed
- More than R89 million spent on targeted enterprises
- Over R12 million spent on local suppliers
- R13 million invested in developing emerging contractors
Message to road users
While the Department understands the frustration caused by roadworks, this upgrade will deliver long-term benefits for Mossel Bay, including:
✅ Safer roads
✅ Less congestion
✅ Better access to businesses
✅ Improved infrastructure for future growth
Motorists are asked to remain patient as the project enters its final construction phase.
Better roads mean better access, which ultimately leads to higher demand for homes in Hartenbos and surrounding areas.
